Redcurrant bush varieties

For us Laxtons no 1 remains one of the best Redccurant bushes. Although it has been cultivated for many, many years this is one Redcurrant bush that always does well and grows healthily. Red Lake too is an excellent variety to add to your Redcurrant bush planting programme. Both varieties also do well as Redcurrant cordons. Redstart is a good Redcurrant variety to add to your Redcurrant Bush collection if you want to extend the fruiting season; Redstart is a Redcurrant bush that ripens later, in August. Redcurrant bushes provide a wealth of fruits for jams, pies, juices, freezing etc. Redcurrant bushes are best grown in a fruit cage, or throw a net over the Redcurrant bush as the fruits ripen to protect them from the birds. Redcurrant cordons are easier to net against birds and also very easy to prune. These Redcurrant cordons should be spaced just 18 apart and can also be fitted on the end of a row of Raspberries.
